CranioSacral Therapy

“Every treatment protocol should be dictated by the wisdom of the patient’s own body.”

Dr. John E. Upledger

What is CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician Dr John E. Upledger  following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.

CranioSacral Therapy is a hands-on healing technique characterised by its gentle, non-invasive, and often subtle touch. Despite its soft approach, CranioSacral Therapy gently influences the central nervous system, enhancing overall bodily functions.

The focus of CranioSacral Therapy is on the craniosacral system. This system includes the membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord, the skull bones to which these membranes are connected, and the cerebrospinal fluid that cushions the brain.

In an ideal state, these fascial structures are perfectly aligned, allowing the cerebrospinal fluid to circulate smoothly around the brain and spinal cord, without any adverse effects from the body’s other systems. However, various life events, starting from in utero, injury, illness and trauma can disrupt this alignment and flow, affecting the system’s optimal functioning.

Using my hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently palpating various locations of the body I use CranioSacral Therapy techniques to help release restrictions in any tissue influencing the craniosacral system and ultimately decreasing pain in the body

Many individuals discover that CranioSacral Therapy is beneficial for an extensive array of issues related to discomfort, pain, and dysfunction. Remarkably, this method also seems to enhance and activate the body’s inherent healing mechanisms, which allows CranioSacral Therapy to be used as a preventive health measure, and has been shown to be beneficial for people seeking help with a wide range of healthcare changes and symptoms including those related to :

Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia                                    Anxiety

Cancer treatment                                                                  Chronic fatigue

Chronic neck and back pain                                               Conception, pregnancy and birth

Fibromyalgia                                                                           Infant and childhood disorders

Long covid                                                                                Migraines and headaches

Autism and Neurodiversity                                                   Orthopaedic problems

Post-Concussion symptoms                                                Post-traumatic stress disorder

Scoliosis                                                                                     TMJ syndrome

CranioSacral Therapy is not a replacement for other treatments, it can be combined with mainstream medical practices to create powerful outcomes.  The links below provide more information on CranioSacral Therapy

SomatoEmotional Release® (SER)

In addition to using CranioSacral Therapy techniques, tissue changes during a session can have an emotional component.  SomatoEmotional Release® (SER) facilitates a gentle therapeutic process sometimes using dialogue to understand imagery and body sensation allowing you to release the adverse effects of past injuries, illness and trauma.

SER can also give you insight into how tissue-held trauma might be influencing current physical and emotional health.  CST and SER can bring together all parts of a person’s mind, body and spirit, allowing for positive physical changes and personal growth.

I am still struggling to understand from a medical and scientific point of view exactly how and why Mairead’s treatments can make such a difference, but they really do. Reasonably regular visits over the last two years at 84 has enabled me to continue enjoying in reasonable comfort a satisfyingly active life including skiing, gardening and working in a ski shop and estate agent, which I was having a problem with before.  After a session with here I drive away in comfort, with a sense of wellbeing and a smile on my face.

Following cancer treatement I found myself struggling with symptoms of emotion, sweating and extreme fatigue. Mairead's gentle, warm touch relaxed and relieved me in such a way that I feel my emotions and physical tensions have been released, greatly improving my symptoms and making my body and mind feel more peaceful and relaxed. Her caring and sensitive approach has given me a new lease of life.

My reason for trying CranioSacral Therapy was to help me with persistent gastric reflux and phlegm. Over a two year period, different GP's recommended anti-acid and gastric medication which failed to relieve my symptoms. My ENT consultant finally decided my symptoms were stress related. My first CranioSacral Therapy session with Mairead was an immediate help. I find regular CranioSacral Therapy sessions relax my throat and reduce my phlegm. I no longer suffer with gastric reflux. Mairead's CranioSacral Therapy sessions have allowed me to experience a level of relaxation and stress relief that I didn't know as possible. I couldn't be more grateful to Mairead for her dedication and expertise.

I have been seeing Mairead fairly regularly over the past 6 months. As well as being a delightful calming person she always has infinite time to listen. I have found that since she has been treating me I generally feel calmer and more at one with everything. She has treated me for both acute and chronic ailments and pain with huge success. I am just so pleased she was recommended to me.

I was recommended to Mairead to help with crippling migraines, after being under a neuro specialist for years and coming to the solution that it’s about pain management and nothing further he could do.  I was willing to try anything and so pleased I did.  The first session I did not know what to expect but I continued on with the sessions and now not only are my migraines less frequent, they are less ‘powerful’.  I cant really explain how or why but I do know that Mairead is now part of my ‘pain management’
